Options for Community Living Marks World AIDS Day, Highlights Housing as Lifesaving Care Since 1994

On December 1, World AIDS Day, Options for Community Living, Inc., Long Island’s largest supportive-housing provider for people living with HIV/AIDS, is reaffirming its three-decade commitment to care. The organization calls on the media and public to recognize the critical connection between stable housing, non-judgmental access to care, and efforts to end the HIV epidemic.

With more than 5,700 residents in Nassau and Suffolk Counties currently living with diagnosed HIV/AIDS (NY State Department of Health), Options’ specialized supportive services are vital to achieving New York State’s goal of zero new HIV infections.

On the Front Line Since 1994: Housing as Healthcare

Since the launch of its Medicaid case management program in 1994, Options has been on the front lines of the HIV epidemic. At that time, AIDS was the leading cause of death for Americans aged 25-44 (CDC). Recognizing the urgent need for support, Options pioneered intensive case management and supportive housing programs, which remain the largest of their kind on Long Island.

Allison Covino, Director of Access to Care Programs, reflected on the early days: “When we began serving people living with HIV, many were facing extreme stigma, homelessness, and loss. Our staff became a lifeline, providing care, education, and advocacy in a time of crisis. Decades later, we are proud that our programs continue to help thousands live healthier, more independent lives.”
